The shopkeeper took the next two days off from work to recover from everything and indulge in some extra quality time with Charlotte, but she missed her routine soon enough. The store couldn’t be rebuilt on its own, after all.

Charlotte joined her for breakfast for once, in her sleepy human form with her standard messy hair, trousers, and septum piercing. While they ate, Charlotte read the paper’s agony column.

That quirk was still a mystery. Was Charlotte really just so interested in tales of lost dogs and improper dining etiquette nightmares?

As the thought crossed Odelia’s mind, Charlotte glanced up at her. “I’ll be returning to work tonight myself. Bandits have been spotted nearby.”

“Oh? How do you know? I didn’t read anything about it in the paper this morning.”

“My informants leave coded messages in the agony column. They tell me where to investigate.”

Ah!

Charlotte rubbed the back of her neck. “But, you know, there’s some interesting gossip, too. You should read it sometime.”

Odelia couldn’t suppress her smile.

“Get plenty of sleep today,” she said. “I wouldn’t want you to be tired tonight.”

Charlotte yawned, rising from the table. “It is going to be a dreadfully long day without you, my dear.”

“You’re exaggerating.”

“Afraid not. I shall be positively miserable without you.” Charlotte walked over and kissed Odelia on the mouth. “I love you.”

A pleasant fire crashed into Odelia’s cheeks as she replied, “I love you too.”

“I’ll see you at supper.”

On the surface, it appeared to be the same routine. But everything was different now.

Odelia never knew she could be so happy.
